A per-90 football statistic is calculated as (event total ÷ minutes played) × 90. It converts observed output into a common playing-time rate, which helps compare players with different minutes. It does not predict what a player would necessarily produce in a full match, and it becomes volatile when the sample is small.

A worked per-90 example

Suppose an illustrative player records six key passes in 540 minutes:

(6 ÷ 540) × 90 = 1.0 key pass per 90

The arithmetic is simple. The analytical work is choosing a valid scope. The six key passes and 540 minutes must refer to the same matches, season, and competition set.

Why not just use appearances?

An appearance can mean 90 minutes, one minute, or anything between. Dividing output by appearances gives equal weight to unequal opportunities.
