Liga Portugal's U-21 core in 2026-27: who is left after a £40m summer

Liga Portugal supplied two of the summer's largest under-23 exports, and the bigger of them set the tone: Chelsea paid a reported £40 million for Geovany Quenda, a 19-year-old who had scored 2 goals in 20 league appearances for Sporting CP, and handed him an eight-year contract on 8 July 2026.

Twenty appearances. Two goals. Forty million pounds. Whatever is being priced there, it is not last season's output.

This is what remains in the league, verified as of 8 August 2026.

Victor Froholdt — Porto, 20, midfielder

Froholdt had the season that should be leading every discussion of young players in Europe, and mostly is not.

In 2025-26 he won both the Liga Portugal Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year — the senior award and the youth award, in the same season, in his first year at Porto after joining in July 2025. In the young player vote he took 49.5%, twice the runner-up's share.

His statistical line is 34 league appearances and 6 goals. On its own that is a perfectly ordinary midfield season, which is exactly why it is worth dwelling on. He is a central midfielder who played essentially every league match of a title-winning campaign at 20 years old, and the league's voters — who watched all of it — rated him above every senior professional in the division.

When the counting stats and the informed judgement disagree this sharply, the counting stats are usually the ones missing something. Central midfield is the position where output data explains the least.

Rodrigo Mora — Porto, 19, attacking midfielder

Mora is the entry that requires discipline.

The case for: he is 19, he was ranked 19th in the world among under-21 players in an April 2026 ranking, he was part of a title-winning Porto squad, and he rejected a summer transfer offer from Al-Ittihad to stay and compete under a new manager.

The case against: 1 goal in 28 league appearances.

For an attacking midfielder, one goal in twenty-eight games is a poor return, and no amount of context makes it a good one. The honest position is that his reputation currently rests on age, technical profile and squad status rather than on production — and that this is a normal place for a 19-year-old to be, but it is not the same thing as a proven season. Watch whether the output moves in 2026-27. If it does not, the reputation should.

Andreas Schjelderup — Benfica, 22, left winger

The most productive player in this group, and the one with the least time left in the "prospect" category.

Schjelderup scored 7 goals in 28 league appearances, and recorded a career-best 10 goals and 6 assists across all competitions. In April 2026 he won Liga Portugal's Player of the Month, Forward of the Month and Young Player of the Month — all three in the same month — and finished second in the Young Player of the Year vote with 24.5%, behind Froholdt.

At 22 he is no longer an under-21 story. He is a Benfica first-team winger whose next season determines whether he stays one.

What the Quenda fee actually tells you

It is tempting to read £40 million for a two-goal season as a market error. It is more useful to read it as a statement about what the fee is for.

Quenda was 19, played 20 league games in a top Portuguese side, and can play right wing or right wing-back. Chelsea bought eight years of a positionally flexible teenager with senior minutes already banked. The 2 goals were close to irrelevant to the valuation.

The same logic explains Gustavo Sá, 21, who moved from Famalicão to Nottingham Forest for around €20 million on 30 July 2026 after 32 league appearances and 4 goals — and was immediately loaned to Olympiacos rather than integrated into the squad.

For anyone assessing Froholdt, Mora or Schjelderup against these prices: goals are the weakest part of the comparison. Minutes, age and positional versatility are doing most of the work.

Reading these players properly

Liga Portugal's shape distorts individual numbers in a specific way. The three big clubs dominate possession against most of the division, which inflates volume statistics for their attackers and suppresses defensive ones. A Porto midfielder's passing totals and a Famalicão midfielder's are not measured on the same scale, even in the same league.
